Thank you so much Richard for your clear and insightful definition of the problem. It feels to me that most people see faster broad band access as a 'nice to have' because the field has been somewhat levelled. But with video so fast becoming the most important online tool for winning and engaging audiences, are opportunities in commerce and industry across all sectors spinning out of the regional reach?

If we are concerned about this and we do want to pressure Government, what is the best way to do this?

Enabling technologies will assist us if we can access them. The disparity between major metropolitan and regional bandwidth is capable of marginalising smaller communities in the same way as poor transport systems already do. As centralised developers utilise greater capacity, usage in low bandwidth areas becomes more restrictive and limited. E.g. it is not a viable option to work on cloud-hosted documents, especially using cloud-based software, even with the benefit of 'business broadband'.
While we acknowledge the cost of NBN initiatives, we need to push our governments to improve regional access and quickly. Equal access can bridge our geographic dislocation and create opportunities for greater inclusion, whether educational, social or commercial.

Lydia - this is a fantastic review of Emergence Festival. Reading it, I felt as though that I had myself attended it (and wished that I had). Like every thing else, technology can be used for the good of our communities or it can be misused. With more conversations like these, it is my hope to see technology, internet and communication systems to be used for the betterment of our regional communities.
thanks again

In reply to <a href="https://opencopy.com.au/uncategorized/emergence/#comment-182">Annette Carmichael</a>.

Thank you Annette. The projects you have spearheaded in performing arts regionally over the years, really encompass exactly what the Emergence is all about.

You raise 3 very important issues.:

*Skills development - in digital content creation.
*Technological infrastructure - access to nbn and 3/4G networks.
*Social Networking between regional areas.

Regarding the third issue, I would like to see a break away from the model that regional towns are isolated satellites networked in and out of the city hub.

By linking with other regional areas through projects like Virtual Dust, innovators can explore their specialities collaboratively and with geographic pride. i.e. without the poor country mouse syndrome.

Hi Lydia

Dance-making across the web is something that regional choreographers are exploring in a trial project called Virtual Dust. Its been an incredible experience of linking with other contemporary dance makers living in regional areas like Broome, Kalgoorlie, Margaret River, Denmark and Albany. Almost all contemporary dance in WA is made in Perth leading to a frustratingly narrow and metropolitan perspective. Distance has always been a big problem for regional choreographers who tend to thrive in collaborative environments and it can be tough to find fellow contemporary dancers in the flesh in country towns....so we have found each other online. Technically its proved challenging with dodgey internet and tackling our incompetencies in filming and editing but we persist. Imagine a day when Virtual Dust can reveal itself to Emergence! Decentralised collaborative dance-making across regional WA.

Thank you Liz.

We are on the crest of a huge evolutionary wave. What we have seen so far is just the beginning. Somethings will remain, some new things will 'emerge'...and some things will be left behind. It's up to all of us to shape the future according to our values. So what do we value? What do we want? What do we want to leave behind?

Personally, I want ...equality...sustainability...freedom...and adventure...and for everyone to get their say....

Lydia - we are so proud to have been part of your successful trip to the Emergence Festival. You raise many topical questions that we at the Chamber of Commerce in Denmark WA are also asking. What are the next industries for the Great Southern? How do we build upon the existing industry sectors of tourism and primary production to ensure they provide a net benefit to community and environment whilst also stimulating new industry sectors. We would welcome, encourage and where possible help facilitate people beginning this conversation. Bring on the beginning of a great new adventure

Hi Mitle,

I use and recommend Google Apps for Business. It does cost $5 per user per month but with the use of aliases you can have more than one email address directing to one user account.
The setup is reasonably complicated as you need to verify your domain name with the Google account. Some website hosting packages can take the pain out of this process with a Gapps (Google Apps) integration module that means you only need to point all your traffic from your domain hosting account to your website hosting account and your web host will deal with the web traffic and direct your email traffic to Gapps.

Thanks for sharing this information - it sounds perfect for what we are hoping to do. In relation to incoming email do you recommend Google Business apps? I'm trying to set this up so that we have an email account before the website is ready but it seems quite complicated for me to do? Many thanks
